When Delaware Valley Community Health (DVCH), a Federally Qualified Health Center for primary care, was looking for healthcare IT solutions—to make improvements to optimize operations prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, partners Comport & Nutanix were there to help. Identifying challenges and opportunities to improve
It was vital that DVCH service the maximum number of patients each day, so their affiliated hospital, Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, could handle the increased volume of COVID-19 patients from the community. Several daily challenges were magnified during the pandemic:
- It was taking providers and staff almost 3 minutes to log into the NextGen EHR, limiting patient care appointments and taking time away from patient encounters.
- Prescription processing was also slow, taking up to five minutes.
- It was taking hours to backup and recover data, leading to increased downtime and risk of data loss.
- Servers were antiquated, overloaded and unable to support organizational growth and advancement.
Chief Information Officer Isaiah Nathaniel began to explore solutions to reduce downtime, improve patient throughput, optimize efficiency and prepare the healthcare system for the future including COVID vaccine workflows.
Implementing a successful healthcare IT solution
Nathaniel analyzed several potential solutions, ultimately selecting Nutanix for seamless integration and scalability along with Comport for expertise in healthcare implementation, networking infrastructure and managed services. With the help of Nutanix Move, he was able to migrate from his old servers to the new clusters in just 7 hours over the weekend, ensuring continuity of care for Delaware Valley Community Health’s 74,000 patients. Comport’s site plan and comprehensive network assessment increased bandwidth to optimal levels with a new Aruba network. Aruba security protections, management tools and best practices improved controls and minimized network staff requirements, an important factor due to DVCH’s IT staff constraints.
Return on investment
According to Nathaniel, the transition from DVCH’s overburdened servers to Nutanix was a change he couldn’t afford to put off any longer. The results were simply outstanding. Login time decreased by 98 seconds or over a minute and a half. For providers seeing 74,000 patients a year, that is equivalent to savings of 1,850 hours annually as a direct result of the transition to Nutanix.
Additionally, data backup and recovery times decreased greatly, providing increased protection against security attacks. Finally, the process for submitting prescriptions decreased from 5 minutes to just 15 seconds, enabling DVCH to increase the number of patients served per day while expediting the treatments they need.
Perhaps most notable, Nutanix and Comport provided the agility DVCH needed to meet the demands of COVID-19. In just one week, they were able to transition three-quarters of their workforce to remote offices and implement a fully functional, fully compliant system for telehealth visits.
